Sustainability at Hotel Botanika

At Hotell Botanika Uppsala, we have seen the benefits of creating a circular and sustainable...
stay.

Environmental objectives
-Create sustainable events that make Botanika an inspiration in sustainability for
local people in Uppsala
-Operate a biophilic hotel where plants and cuttings are at the centre of our work.
activity
-Reduce our carbon dioxide emissions by reducing our consumption of electricity, water and waste,
chemicals and transport from 2022 to 2023

Environmental policy
At Hotell Botanika Uppsala we have chosen to break down our work areas to:

1. bar and restaurant activities
Here we focus on raw materials as the largest source of emissions and reduce these by
choose green, vegetarian options, locally produced and reduced transport distances
and food waste recovery

2. Hotel operations
Within our hotel operations, we have chosen to be a green hotel with a plant profile, which
means that we grow our own plants, have plants in every hotel room, and a crazy amount of plants in the bathroom.
our social spaces to contribute to a better planet. We work on environmental policy through
to focus on how we can reduce our emissions of energy, water, transport, chemicals, etc.
and waste. We also want to be an inspiration in Uppsala through sustainable events.

3. social sustainability:
In social sustainability, we work on who we employ, who lives with us, and who is not.
who appears in our media channels.

Action plan
We work continuously to implement our environmental objectives with this action plan:

Bar and Restaurant:

Saving food
Botanika is part of the "Too Good To Go" app where we saved 50 portions of food in 2020.
and hopes to quadruple that by 2021. The app sells food that has a short expiry date for
half the price to make the most of the food and reduce waste.

Food from the plant kingdom
On our menu, we work as much as possible with non-animal products.
products to reduce our carbon footprint. We have a wide range of vegan and
vegetarian options and our chefs are actively working to create an enticing range of products.
which is mostly from local ingredients with a focus on the plant kingdom.

Choosing local produce
At our breakfast, we work with a Nordic buffet to promote local ingredients such as fruits and vegetables.
promotes our region and country and to reduce long-distance transport. Our raw materials are
mostly from Sweden. The purchase of food and drink is always based on locally grown and processed food.
Swedish where possible in terms of product and price.
Local supply of drinks
We are proud of our local partnerships in the bar where we actively invite local people to join us.
breweries and spirits suppliers to host us and to offer Master
Classes. We offer local beer, wine and tonic and try to choose European spirits.

We grow it ourselves!
We mix our drinks the "Nordic way". Instead of topping a drink with a slice of lemon or lime from the other side of the globe, we top it with fresh thyme, rosemary, and pepper.
mint grown locally, even as local as our backyard!

Hotel:

Renewable energy and energy-efficient solutions
Our hotel will be fuelled by renewable energy and we are currently working on a future plan to
run the hotel on its own solar energy. Energy-efficient LED lamps should be used and replaced.
when replacing light sources. We have carried out an energy declaration during quarter 1, 2022, in order to
working with our suppliers to review the energy system. Adjustment of
heat exchanger is completed. We have implemented a project to reduce electricity consumption.
in our ventilation together with AirTeam.

Biophilic design
We are currently working on establishing an in-house greenhouse to be able to drive up
cuttings and fresh herbs with plants in all public areas and in our rooms. This is
helps to capture carbon dioxide as plants are the environment's best friend.

Sustainability events
We work on sustainable events that support local businesses. Our spring market
highlights "slow companies" that focus on circularity, reuse and sustainability. We
organises swap days that are entirely based on reusing clothes, books and equipment.
plants. We organise these events in collaboration with Slow living Uppsala who are
are passionate about a more environmentally friendly Uppsala.

Waste
We are currently working on building a recycling centre that will be ready by quarter 4.
2022. We are almost completely free of unnecessary plastic products. We sort our rubbish and
offers a recycling centre for our guests.

Reduction of environmentally hazardous chemicals
Our soaps and shampoos for guests are organic products with as few chemicals as possible.
as possible. The chemicals we use are environmentally classified as red, yellow and green.
green, depending on how they affect people, animals and the environment.

Saving water
By 2020, we have installed water-saving showers and taps, as well as toilets for
reduce water use.
Re-use of towels and change of linen is only carried out after a guest's stay if
unless otherwise requested by the guest, in order to save water and energy.
Sustainable supply chains
That suppliers are environmentally certified and work with clear environmental objectives. Where we have not yet
found sustainable suppliers, we work actively to replace them with more sustainable companies.

Holiday guests!
We work actively to promote Swedish tourism and attract domestic tourists to Sweden.
hotel guests. This reduces long air travel distances for our travellers as they
come to Botanika mostly by train and car.

Reduce transport distances
Through carefully thought-out ordering procedures and joint purchasing of goods, we reduce the number of
transport to the hotel. We choose mostly Nordic products as the right choice of products
reduces global deliveries.

Social sustainability:
We welcome everyone!
We are a multicultural meeting place where both our employees and guests should feel like
feel welcome regardless of origin or orientation. As the Hard Rock Café says, "Love all,
serve all!"
Employment for those far from the labour market
Through traineeships, job training and job introductions, we provide opportunities for people who are
are far from the labour market or at the end of their career to work with us.
